Well,

I have just installed one of the nightly builds on my laptop (Dell XPSm1330), and I must say I'm impressed with Fedora 12.
It was the 20090911 build, previous to this I had tried the alpha release, which did not install due to the screen freezing and washing out.

I'm having good experiences with F12 generally, with only a couple of glitches (biggest one is that printing to a Brother printer causes all my networking to die, I think it is related to the Brother driver though.)

Other than that, I must say the automated bug reporting tool is excellent, making the bug filing process alot easier.

Of note is that fact that what we are calling as alpha is what we used to call till Fedora 11 as the beta. We used to have alpha, beta, preview release and release candidate. Now we have alpha, beta and rc. So you can expect a more "complete" release from a feature perspective.

Also, if you are a sys-admin, you would fit will into the Fedora infrastructure team, if you want to volunteer. Much of what we do in Fedora requires no programming skills at all. So don't let that stop you from contributing.

Head to http://join.fedoraproject.org and take a look

You're absolutely right, and it's not something I made clear at the time of post. I test and play with countless distros, at least most of the top 50 at distrowatch, but Fedora is the only Alpha I have time for (and one of only three betas) as Fedora has a special place in my heart, RHEL/CENTOS are my servers of choice for any of my clients and some business desktops. Fedora is my recommendation for everyone else. I should have better explained my speed comments in the post. I do expect alpha's to be slow due to the debug options, I also expect it to be buggy. I guess it jumped out at me because the boot was so much slower and pauses for a while, then once everything was up and running it seems quicker than usual. I was trying to express the opinion that the boot seems a bit slower than I recall on the F11a but once running it seems much faster.. though admittedly, its been a few days since I ran F11a so who knows. Regardless this spin is far more stable than I expect for alpha, it looks like we're on track for a great release. I don't get to play with Rawhide much, I do have a rawhide box but I don't use it enough to keep it adequately updated, so alphas are my first real chance to see where we're headed. I'm so incredibly excited about F12 and the continuing strength of the platform.

Thanks.
Oh, P.S. Since I'm a sysadmin-consultant and not a programmer, I take every chance I get to personally thank an Open Source programmer. Thanks.

As noted in the release notes, performance is expected to be slower for the development builds because of more debugging options.

Thanks for the feedback.
